Well, i will argue that Harry has (still to this day) no real experience, education or apparent skills to earn serious money beyond his previous tell-all-the-shit on his fam & the Monarchy for big money. That the Palace (& Prince William via the donation to the Royal Foundation from his settlement on blagging from the NGN) had been the foundation, the financier, the provider of skills & expertise, the global access & clout, convening power - all while buffering Harry from his own defects of character & behavior, is not in doubt. That is clearly observable. He is apparently trying to grow into becoming a decent speech-maker, however this has not been overly lucrative so far & his skills there seem not to be speeding along. While yes, Harry did bring money to the 'Alliance for Freedom, Fame & Fortune', & both contributed to their initial tell-all huge take - equally both have been heavy spenders. Him on security & court cases, her on couture, expensive jewelry & the "personal smalls & accoutrements" of luxurious living. BUT here is the difference i see: Harry in addition to the above serious limitations, lacks serious ambition & motivation by all appearances, which Meghan has in spades, one might even say a vicious & overwhelming drive. Were i 1/2 of this notorious alliance, i would be getting worried too & trying to build sparks under the other half. The money may not be gone yet but it seems to be trending that way, with Harry more intent on becoming a pseudo-Henry Kissinger on the world stage than any serious attempt at making money.

The ill-advised legal larks certainly have been a huge money drain, driven by Harry.

So very true & he hasn't yet paid his Govt bill on the RAVEC cases - ordered to pay 90% of the government's legal fees—which surpassed $748,000 for the initial proceedings alone. Combined with his own team's fees & the appeal costs, his total legal liability is estimated to be over $1.5 million. Plus the incalculable cost of tanking his reputation from these cases which includes his lies within his testimony. It's no wonder the Mrs. can justify all the jewelry & couture is it.

If they (Meghan) hadn’t grossly overspent on a Hollywood lifestyle, they could have lived a very comfortable life. How much has Meghan spent on (terrible looking) clothes, jewelry, a huge house they don’t need?

If Charles gives them even more money than he already has, it will be foolishly wasted.

Time for them to grow up and live in the real world with the fabulous assets they have, and which were mostly provided to them, rather than earned.

There’s no evidence that Meghan Markle was worth £5m. That figure doesn’t tally with her earnings on Suits, she didn’t own property, and didn’t they complain that she had to buy a sofa on her credit card?

I believe the figure was made up to make her look more successful than she was and thus a more suitable match to marry a prince.

Not only does Megs have an inflated ego but that may lead to inflated balance sheets.... typical of a grifter.

When the Duke of Sussex left the constitutional framework of the Crown, he exchanged an inherited purpose for the demands of the marketplace. Within the Monarchy, status derives from continuity, duty, and service; outside it, relevance is measured by visibility, branding, and commercial success. The difficulty is that wealth can purchase comfort, influence, and opportunity, but it cannot provide a raison d’être. The tragedy is not the loss of royal status, but the discovery that money cannot replace a calling.

I don't think anyone thought Meghan brought more to the table financially than Harry. But a 30 million dollar lump sum is inadequate for an independent Montecito lifestyle beyond a few years.

Several accounts at the time of marriage reported that Meghan overestimated the wealth she married into. She thought it would be a BRF-sustained high-end lifestyle with endless clothes, very large homes and private travel. Frogmore and Nottingham Cottages were a cold slap in the face. So she figured she would use the 30 million and put all her chips on red back among the wealthy and powerful in California, to start a celebrity brand. And squeeze blood out of BRF turnip through tell-alls in the meantime.

Harry has no skill that could possibly generate 8 figures annually. Whatever they do make gets a bump up due to their titles, which of course he brought to the table.

From his point of view, he invested rather a lot in an enterprise that is turning out to be rather a dud. They could both do with some lessons in financial management.

I have no sympathy for either of them - they are the authors of their own misfortune!

They should’ve bought a less expensive house.

Word is they thought their notoriety would allow them to quickly flip it at a hefty profit. But the house is completely outdated and Montecito-level money people don't care who owned it. Another miscalculation by Meghan.

I agree with your incredibly sharp and grounded perspective—you’ve laid out the hard maths of the situation. It is a refreshing balm to the media reports that completely forgot about the substantial capital that Harry brought into this marriage. He wasn’t a pauper and didn't show up empty-handed; he quite literally funded the launch of their “freedom flight.”

But there is a real difference between having capital and having a sustainable, revenue-generating business model, especially living in the country of California. He may have given up far more institutionally and brought the initial millions to the table, but as the old saying goes, he has made his bed and now he has got to lay in it. Relying on grievance-merching and the continual lecturing to us on global ethics has hit a point of diminishing returns. The content-creation well has run dry (no matter how many “shows” they have in development), the Montecito overhead remains out of this world, and the public has grown weary of their elite moralizing.

I also think there is an underlying issue and that Harry has spent his entire life inside an institutional bubble where things like security, travel, and housing were just magically "paid for" by the state, Pa or “friends or interested parties.” Now, they are facing the harsh reality of having to foot the bill and we know, even pseudo-royals are notoriously “frugal” when it comes to spending their own money.

If they are going to survive the next chapter, Harry is going to have to pivot away from the podium and polo ponies. It’s way past the time to move beyond the "lecturing" phase and transition into something that actually brings home the bacon—and fries it up in the pan. He needs a viable and sustainable income stream, because content deals built entirely on royal boo boos won't keep their Montecito manor solvent forever. And to be quite honest, I am not sure if he has the wherewithal, skills, abilities or desire.

Harry needs to get a job because he’s still a young man and is hardly spending his entire time working at his various philanthropic pursuits. That’s the contrast between him and Meghan. She is trying to get businesses started and staying busy. But Harry would sound more like a house husband if he wasn’t jaunting around giving the kind of speeches retired politicians make. Without earning the right to give those speeches.

Get a job doing what? He has no skills or much of a transferable education to a working position. And as for her, she hasn't shown to have talent or skills for much of anything either. She seems to think rearranging food on a platter makes her gifted in the culinary sciences.

Valerie's avatar

Granted that he isn’t that kind of man (or celebrity) but it would be possible for someone to put their ego aside and learn some skills. William didn’t just finish off his term of the necessary Royal learning in the military but actually did his time in Search and Rescue and then also with Air Ambulance. He had to get a civil pilot’s license to do the latter. When William talks about grief and loss, he doesn’t just bring out how own loss as a teen, he speaks about losses he has actually seen in his work.

But the comment is about Harry and I agree with you, Harry isn’t that type of person. Which does make me wonder about his time in Afghanistan, whether that’s all he is going to continue to lay claim to for his persona. That and being a spare.

My comment about Meghan was simply that she is at least trying to look engaged. I was surprised she didn’t go back to acting, go back to appearing in the reprise of Suits, but maybe the truth is that it wasn’t that she didn’t want them but that they didn’t want her.

He needs therapy to address his issues, drug rehab and a divorce from her..... and to admit to the coverup of his children's births....

It's hard to erase the past 8-9 years of their mutual failure. There's no reset or reboot button. And Mugs has gone through Harry's inherited and given wealth like grease through a goose. It's been no secret that Mugs is casting about for a billionaire and that they largely live apart.

If Harry had real gumption, he'd relocate to Botswana and work with animals, out of the headlines and courts for over a year. He'd have to do this under the aegis of a non-political and well regarded non-profit. Mugs will not follow him there. If Mugs had courage, they'd divorce.

Kids? I don't regard them as I don't believe they are real. Never on a trip other than the vacation, surfing, and plant store stories.

Should we add to Harry's inheritances, the $1m allowance for ???years given by his father. All expenses were paid, that $1m was pure play money. Even for Harry, it would be difficult to play away $1m per year.

Montecito was the wrong choice. Plain and simple...and she doesn't fit in there. They cannot maintain a lifestyle there.

Harry's Royal title opened the door to Netflix and Spotify and the Sussexes did not have the talent to fully deliver.

They made their bed.
